Dangerous Goods Licence (not offered by IWDTC at present)

STATUS: Currently under development.

RELEASE DATE: Yet to be confirmed.

Queensland Transport is the authority for the safe transport of dangerous goods by road in Queensland. Major changes to the requirements for transporting dangerous goods by road and rail across Australia came into effect in Queensland in mid-1998. The package of reforms was developed by the National Road Transport Commission in conjunction with industry, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau and all Australian states and territories.

When do I need to hold a dangerous goods driver licence?

You will need to carry this licence whenever you are transporting dangerous goods in a receptacle with a capacity of more than 500 litres (L) or more than 500 kilograms (kg). However, you do not need this licence if you are transporting dangerous goods in an intermediate bulk container, and the intermediate bulk container is not filled or emptied while on the vehicle, and the total capacity of the intermediate bulk containers are not more than 3000 L.

Note:
an intermediate bulk container is a rigid or flexible portable packaging for transporting dangerous goods that has been tested by the requirements of the Australian Dangerous Goods Code and is designed for mechanical handling.

Regardless whether or not you are required to hold a dangerous goods driver licence, you must obtain adequate instruction and training when transporting any dangerous goods.

Dangerous goods bulk vehicle licence applications are processed through selected Queensland Transport customer service centres. You will need to complete an application form and pay a fee per vehicle. The fee is calculated on the size of the vehicle you are licensing.

To be eligible to apply for a dangerous goods bulk driver licence you must:

  • be at least 21 years of age
  • hold a current drivers licence
  • have a medical certificate issued within the six months immediately before applying
  • the medical certificate must be completed by a qualified medical practitioner in accordance with "Assessing Fitness to Drive, Commercial and Private Vehicle Drivers" (September 2003)
  • have completed an approved dangerous goods bulk driver training course not more than six months immediately before applying
  • have an acceptable criminal history and traffic history.

You do not need a dangerous goods bulk driver licence when the:

  • load only contains packaged dangerous goods
  • goods are transported in intermediate bulk containers
  • intermediate bulk containers are not filled or emptied on the vehicle
  • total capacity of the intermediate bulk containers on the vehicle is not more than 3000 litres.

Please note—whether or not you are required to hold a dangerous goods bulk drivers licence, you are required to obtain adequate instruction and training when transporting any amount of dangerous goods.

A vehicle label is issued for each vehicle contained on the dangerous goods bulk vehicle licence. These labels must be displayed in a prominent place on the vehicle.
