Heavy Vehicle Training

The following table sets out the period you are required to hold a particular class of licence before you are eligible to progress to the next higher class of licence. This period may be a single continuous period or made up of a number of individual periods. Any time your licence is suspended or expired cannot be included when calculating this period.

Class of Licence Held Required Holding Period Next Eligible Class of Licence
RE At least 1 year R
C At least 1 year LR or MR
C At least 2 years HR
MR or HR At least 1 year HC
HR or HC At least 1 year MC

Please arrive 15 minutes before your lesson, if possible to arrange payment and future lessons. If the office is attended, please pay fees and book your next session. Lessons generally run on the hour. If a trainer/truck is 5 - 10 minutes late it is usually due to traffic - so we won't be too far away.

Before a practical driving test can be booked it must be paid for and the written test ($18.05) must be passed.

On the day of the driving test the fee includes a one-hour warm up before the test with an IWDTC trainer, followed by a 60min driving test with a Queensland Department of Transport testing officer.

At least 48 hours notice must be given if you cannot take your practical test, otherwise the booking fee shall be charged.

If you already hold a car or motorbike licence, you will need to do a multiple choice test. There are 10 questions. You must get at least 8 out of the 10 questions correct to pass the test.

If you already hold a heavy vehicle class of licence, you are not required to pass a road rules test for a higher class of vehicle.

You are only allowed to sit one test each day.

You will be assessed on the following key elements of driving a medium rigid vehicle:

  • Pre-drive checks eg hazards, washers/wipers, horn
  • Manoeuvres - reversing exercise (left and/or right)
  • Gear changing eg working down the gear in a smooth and steady manner
  • Hill start eg without the hand brake, without rolling back
  • Specific driving situations eg roundabout, intersections, 40 zones
  • Vehicle operation skills eg smooth and steady acceleration, braking, steering
  • Hazard recognition and decision making skills eg observation and scanning

Saturday Testing - Heavy Vehicles

Saturday testing is available from the Caboolture Department of Transport Customer Service Centre - classes LR - HC. NB: IWDTC does not offer LR training.

There will be two examiners posted to do tests on Saturdays. They will either do a half day (6 tests) or full day (10 tests).

IWDTC coordinates Saturday testing appointments. Individual applicants cannot book directly with Queensland Transport for a Saturday test. It must be done through IWDTC.

Saturday testing is not available when the Friday or Monday is a Public Holiday.

If an applicant pulls out of a test spot on Saturday, 48 hourse notice is required, otherwise a $100.00 fee shall be charged to cover government charges and administration.

Sunday Lessons

Sunday lessons are available on occasions but not every weekend. Priority is given to meetings demands in the MC so only when two trainers are available or we don't have an MC booked can we provide MR-HC lessons.
